DENVER HARBOR LITTLE LEAGUE CELEBRATES 50 YEARS!
Posted by JenCAN at 2/18/2009 1:21 PM CST

It is with great pride that Denver Harbor Little League announces to the community that 2009 is a very big year for its supporters. DHLL has been notified that it is the longest running charter in its district, 50 years, to service children and families of the Denver Harbor community. The fact that DHLL has had the opportunity to remain such a positive influence in the neighborhood is something that everyone, especially families living in Denver Harbor, can really be proud of!
Denver Harbor Little League Baseball has been a staple in the community since 1959, and it remains a strong organization that is thriving and growing. With this baseball season, the league will celebrate not only what it has accomplished in the past 50 years, but what the children and community can look forward to in the future. There have been so many great ballplayers that have found their roots in Denver Harbor Little League Baseball, and the friendships that have formed in DHLL have lasted a lifetime. DHLL wants that
The Denver Harbor Little League Board President, Genaro Cardenas, would like to make this year a homecoming for the league. He is inviting all of DHLL Baseball's former players, coaches, teammoms, and supporters to come and be involved not only with the league, but with the community that has been so important to those who grew up in Denver Harbor. Denver Harbor's families have pride in their community and it shows as each year the league welcomes players whose mothers, fathers, aunts, uncles, brothers, sisters, and sometimes even grandmothers and grandfathers, played for the league. They bring their children back every year because they know that it is a positive and nurturing environment, and has been since 1959.
Denver Harbor Little League Baseball is currently registering boys and girls, ages 5 - 16, and sponsors for its 2009 season. For information about registration or sponsorship, you can contact President Genaro Cardenas at 713-775-8125 or VP Ariel Garza at 832-198-8998. Future postings concerning Opening Day activities and the parade on March 28, 2009 willl be listed!

Dance & Benefit Show to Hit Denver Harbor-

You may have seen flyers pop up in the last week in your favorite local restaurants - like Los Jacales- or while doing some shopping at Sol Supermarket, but many of you do not know the story behind the event that is hitting Emilianos off I-10 in DH this weekend.

A big BBQ & Dance Benefit is taking place right off of Wayside Drive for a man called 'Big Phil' by his friends and compadres on Sunday, February 22, 2009. Big Phil has been involved with several local tejano, cumbia, and other Spanish bands over the past years being one of the great ears in the sound tech department. Late last year in 2008, Big Phil had to have his leg amputated due to complications with diabeties and an accident. Eight groups, including Los Gavilanes de la Cumbia, Avizo, & la raza connection are scheduled to play from Noon to Midnight at this big benefit in hopes of raising money & support for Big Phil.

Julio of Los Gavilanes de la Cumbia said "He's been helping us with sound and knows alot of artists in the area, and it's just a way for us to help him out with whatever hospital or other expenses he is having to deal with now." Besides getting to hear a great variety of local bands, the event also promises live DJ's on the 1's & 2's, drink specials, raffles, moonwalks for the kiddos, and BBQ Plates for only $6!

We are wishing Julio & the rest of the people that have been working hard to organize this big event a huge success and turnout. So, come out, enjoy the live music, get yourself a few BBQ plates, and bring the kids! Show your support to community efforts to organize & bring great things like this to our neighborhood & more importantly, for Big Phil!

Love Was On Our Streets This Week-

Denver Harbor- Houston, Tx-

Valentines Day this year in Houston was not the sunniest or brightest, but that didn't stop the people from getting out of their homes to find that special something for that special someone. Stands lined both sides of Lyons Avenue this past weekend, full of flowers, teddy bears, candy, and your occassional heart-shaped balloon hook-up too!

Lyons Avenue is one of the most visited streets in DH, so, from what I could tell, the vendors had little trouble finding last minute shoppers. All the options also made it a great spot to bargain ourselves a deal.

The best thing about the entire sight was that all the people running the stands were from DH. That meant that the money we gave to purchase a sweet for our sweet went right back into our community. Doing this ensures that on a neighborhood level, we can all maintain with eachothers help. It's great to see that this type of exchange can still exist in such a modern and fast-paced world!

So, what was the merchandise like? Well, my mom loved her cute little glass vase filled with gorgeous, deep red roses!
